ADAIR, Iowa – A railroad in western Iowa has been shut down because of a construction crane that toppled onto the tracks and killed the crane operator.
The crane was moving a beam Tuesday morning in a construction zone on an Interstate 80 bridge near Adair when the crane toppled through a hole in the bridge deck and onto the tracks below.
Authorities say railroad traffic will be rerouted until debris is removed.
The operator worked for A.M. Cohron & Son Inc. of Clarinda. Company chairman Keith Harlan says he was in his mid- to late 20s but did not release his name.
Crews at the site about 50 miles west of Des Moines are replacing the bridge over the railroad.
