Zola sacked by Cagliari

Cagliari, Italy (SportsNetwork.com) - Cagliari announced on Monday that the club has fired manager Gianfranco Zola after a poor run of results that has left the team in the relegation zone.

Zola took charge of Cagliari in December from Zdenek Zeman, but after posting just two wins in 10 games, Zola's men find themselves in 18th place and four points from safety.

A statement from Cagliari read: "The decision was not an easy one given the greatness of a man who has written unforgettable pages in the history of Cagliari and who has represented Sardinia with prestige on the international stage. We would like to thank him and his staff for dedicating themselves to the job in a professional and passionate manner and wish them all the best for the future."

Zola was born in the Cagliari area and played two seasons for the club at the end of his career, but he will be unable to rescue the team from the drop.

According to reports that job may once again belong to Zeman, who could take over for the remainder of the campaign.
