Zakopalova wins opener in Poland

Third-seeded Klara Zakopalova was among Monday's first-round winners at the inaugural Katowice Open.

The Czech veteran took care of compatriot Kristyna Pliskova 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 on the indoor surface at Spodek.

Meanwhile, eighth-seeded Brit Laura Robson suffered an upset at the hands of Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino, 5-7, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1.

Also on Day 1, German Annika Beck doused Polish wild card Marta Domachowska 6-3, 7-5, Czech wild card Karolina Pliskova got past Spaniard Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 6-1, 3-6, 6-0, and Croat Petra Martic overcame Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-2.

This week's top seeds are former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic and Italian veteran Roberta Vinci. The champion will take home $40,000.
