New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending September 25.
With a perfect inning on Monday, September 19, Rivera closed out a 6-4 Yankees win over the Minneosta Twins, earning the 602nd save of his 17-year career, surpassing Trevor Hoffman for the most saves in baseball history.
The record-breaking day came 15 years and 125 days after he record his first career save on May 17, 1996 against the California Angels.
Over his career, the 12-time All-Star has converted 89.3 percent of his 675 save opportunities, and since April 21, 2007 has converted 92.7 percent of his save chances -- the best ratio in baseball over that span.
This is Rivera's third career weekly honor.
Other notable performances included Rivera's teammate Derek Jeter, Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera, Twins outfielder Ben Revere and Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury.
