Second-seeded Petra Kvitova and four-time reigning champion Caroline Wozniacki were each winners Wednesday at the $637,000 New Haven Open at Yale, a final U.S. Open tune-up.
Kvitova, last year's Wibledon titlist, defeated American Nicole Gibbs, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the Thursday's quarterfinal round.
Kvitova will face eighth-seeded Czech Lucie Safarova. Safarova reached the quarters by blitzing China's Zheng Jie, 6-4, 6-0.
The third-seeded former world No. 1 Wozniacki improved to 19-0 lifetime in New Haven with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory over Swede Sofia Arvidsson on the hardcourts at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale.
The Danish star beat Czech Petra Cetkovska in last year's New Haven finale. Her quarterfinal opponent on Thursday will be Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova.
A sixth-seeded Cibulkova whipped German Andrea Petkovic 6-4, 6-1. Petkovic, who entered 2012 ranked 10th in the world, has battled injuries for most of the year, as this marked her first event in nearly four months and only her fourth tournament of the season.
The 2012 New Haven champion will collect $107,000.
