The new Winnipeg NHL team has scheduled a press conference for 3 p.m. ET Wednesday, where it is expected to make what is being called a "significant hockey operations announcement".

The announcement to be held in Winnipeg's MTS Centre, will likely be another major step as the franchise sets up operations for its inaugural season in the Manitoba capital.

The franchise, formerly known as the Atlanta Thrashers, was recently bought by True North Sports & Entertainment and is being moved to Winnipeg pending approval by the Board of Governors on June 21. The move was also contingent on the franchise's ability to sell 13,000 season tickets after the announcement, a goal the organization met 17 minutes after tickets went on sale to the general public on June 4.

The upcoming season will mark the return of NHL hockey to Winnipeg for the first time in 15 years.
