GLADSTONE, N.J. (AP) — Michelle Wie set up a quarterfinal match against top-ranked Jiyai Shin, beating Karine Icher 3 and 2 in the Sybase Match Play Championship.
Shin advanced Saturday with a 4-and-3 victory over Beatriz Recari.
"She just hits it straight, she gets on the green and she makes putts," Wie said, referring to Shin. "So it's going to be a challenge for sure."
In the other afternoon quarterfinals at Hamilton Farm, fourth-seeded Yani Tseng faced Sun Young Yoo, Catriona Matthew played Angela Stanford, and Haeji Kang took on Amy Yang.
Tseng beat Inbee Park 5 and 3, Yoo outlasted Song-Hee Kim 1-up, Catriona Matthew downed M.J. Hur in 19 holes, Stanford topped Amanda Blumenherst in 20 holes, Yang defeated Morgan Pressel 4 and 3, and Kang edged Jee Young Lee 1-up.
Wie overcame some shaky ballstriking to finish off Icher in 16 holes.
"I woke up at 4:50 again and I wasn't awake," said Wie, seeded eighth. "I just grinded out there today. I hit a couple missed shots, but I'm going to get back on the range and get that feeling back."
