Vikings finalize Freeman's contract, cut No. 3 QB Bethel-Thompson to make room

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

The Minnesota Vikings have waived quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson to make room for new quarterback Josh Freeman on the roster.

Freeman's contract was finalized Tuesday. He became available last week when he was cut by Tampa Bay after falling out of favor.

Bethel-Thompson's potential intrigued the Vikings enough to make him the third quarterback last season, and the team cut veteran Sage Rosenfels instead. But he became expendable when Freeman picked Minnesota with Matt Cassel and Christian Ponder already in place.

Bethel-Thompson played at Division II Sacramento State after starting his college career at UCLA. He also played in the Arena Football League and the United Football League and had brief appearances on the rosters of San Francisco and Miami in the NFL. The Vikings signed him in 2012.
