Cady Lalanne scored 23 points, and UMass regrouped to beat Manhattan 77-68 on Tuesday afternoon after the Jaspers sent the game to overtime with a buzzer-beating alley-oop off an inbounds pass.
The Minutemen were in control leading 61-59 with the ball and 2 seconds left in regulation, but Manhattan forced a turnover. Then no UMass player got a body on Rich Williams, who soared to slam down a lob from Emmy Andujar.
The Minutemen regained momentum in overtime, outscoring the Jaspers 16-7. The 11 a.m. start was part of the Tip-Off Marathon.
Trey Davis added 14 points for UMass (3-0), which made 27 of 29 free throws. Manhattan (0-2) was just 8 of 16 from the line.
Andujar led the Jaspers with 21 points.
Derrick Gordon and Maxie Esho added 12 points each for UMass. Gordon, the first openly gay player in Division I men's basketball, was 8 for 8 from the free-throw line and added eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals.
