Turkey's Asli Cakir Alptekin and Gamze Bulut finished with the gold and silver, respectively, in the women's 1,500 meters Friday.
Cakir Alptekin made her winning move on the backstretch of the final lap, powering to the front and holding off the field to win in a time of 4 minutes, 10.23 seconds.
It is the first Olympic medal for the 26-year-old, who won bronze in the event at this year's world indoor championships.
Bulut, who paced the field prior to Cakir Alptekin, was 0.17 seconds behind for silver. Friday marked the first time any Turkish woman has medaled in this event at the Olympics.
Bahrain's Maryam Yusuf Jamal finished in 4:10.74 to take bronze after passing pre-race favorite Abeba Aregawi of Ethiopia. Aregawi was in contention for a medal with less than 100 meters to go, but broke her stride and slowed dramatically, ending up in fifth.
American Shannon Rowbury was sixth, but her teammate Morgan Uceny did not finish after falling. Uceny also fell during the 1,500 at the 2011 world championships.
