Cleveland, OH – The Detroit Tigers have unconditionally released former closer Jose Valverde.
The Tigers had designated Valverde for assignment on June 21. He recently accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Toledo, where he picked up seven saves with a 4.09 ERA in 11 games.
The 35-year-old reliever appeared in 20 games for the Tigers this season, dropping his lone decision and pitching to a 5.59 earned run average, despite recording nine saves.
In 605 career games with Arizona, Houston and Detroit, Valverde is 26-32 with a 3.19 ERA and 286 saves.
