Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera has been named American League Player of the Month for May.

Cabrera batted .379 with 12 home runs, 33 RBI and 23 runs scored over 28 games to capture his third career monthly award with Detroit. He also won the honor in July 2008 and August 2012.

The 2012 American League MVP has hit safely in 48 of his 55 games this season and is the first player in MLB history to be batting at least .340 with 15 home runs and 60 RBI entering June 1st.

Cabrera, a seven-time All-Star, leads the AL in batting average (.367), hits (83), runs scored (45), RBI (65), total bases (151) and on-base percentage (.442). He also ranks second in home runs (17) and slugging percentage (.668).

Others who were considered for the award included Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim outfielder Mike Trout and Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis, who won the AL Player of the Month award for April.
