Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara is expected to be out until November after undergoing ankle surgery on Monday.
Thiago moved to Bayern this summer from Barcelona, and he sustained the ankle injury in Saturday's 2-0 win over Nurnberg, which was his second Bundesliga appearance for the defending champions this season.
Bayern said in a statement on the club's website on Monday that Thiago "will spend the next five to six weeks on crutches before starting a rehab program."
Joining the 22-year-old on the sidelines is fellow Spanish midfielder Javi Martinez, who returned from Spain's recent trip to Ecuador with an adductor problem.
Martinez will miss Bayern's match with Freiburg in league play on Tuesday and will most likely be unavailable for the UEFA Super Cup match with Chelsea on Friday.
