Seven Paralympic archers are now London-bound after conquering the U.S. Paralympic Team Trials on April 28 in Chula Vista, Calif. Matt Stutzman (Kalona, Iowa) and Dugan Denton (Joliet, Mont.) will join already-qualified Jeff Fabry (Tulane, Calif.) to represent the U.S. in the compound men's open classification. Jerry Shields (Jacksonville, Fla.) in compound men W1, Eric Bennett (Suprise, Ariz.) and Lee Ford (Perry, Ga.) in standing recurve and Russell Wolfe (Williamsburg, Va.) in recurve men W2 round out the U.S. Paralympic Archery Team.
Team USA brought home a medal of each color on April 27 with four top-three finishes at the 2012 French Olympic Sailing Week in Hyeres, France. The Team Maclaren trio of Anna Tunnicliffe (Plantation, Fla.), Molly Vandemoer (Stanford, Calif.) and Debbie Capozzi (Bayport, N.Y.) led the way with a gold medal in the women's match racing event, while Sally Barkow (Nashotah, Wis.), Alana O'Reilly (Charleston, S.C.) and Elizabeth Kratzig Burnham (Miami, Fla.) teamed up to secure the silver medal in the same event. Duo Amanda Clark (Shelter Island, N.Y.) and Sarah Lihan (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) also earned a silver medal in the women's 470, while Jen French (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and JP Creignou (St. Petersburg, Fla.) finished third in the SKUD-18 competition.
Archers competed in the second nomination shoot of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Archery in Chula Vista, Calif., which concluded April 28. Brady Ellison (Glendale, Ariz.) leads the men's pack with 82 points, while Miranda Leek (Des Moines, Iowa) holds the top spot for the women with 75.75 points.
Allison Springer (Marshall, Va.), riding Arthur, captured the 2012 USEF National CCI4* championship on April 29 in Lexington, Ky. Boyd Martin (Cochranville, Va.), riding Otis Barbortiere, was the second-highest U.S. finisher and scored the reserve national champion title.
Seth Kelsey (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led Team USA with a 24th-place finish at the Heidenheim Epee World Cup on April 28 in Germany.
Team USA scored four bronze medals at the Pan American Championships on April 28 in Montreal. Nick Delpopolo (Westfield, N.J.), Anthony Turner (Miami, Fla.), Brad Bolen (River Forest, Ill.) and Nathan Kearney (Keller, Texas) each earned third place in their respective weight divisions.
Ten athletes captured national titles in their respective weight divisions at USA Judo's 2012 Senior National Championships on April 21 in Irving, Texas.
Matt Emmons (Brown Mills, N.J.) captured the 35th world cup medal of his career with a silver-medal performance in the men's 50m three-position rifle at the ISSF "London Prepares" World Cup on April 28. Meanwhile, Kayle Browning (Wooster, Ark.), Kim Rhode (El Monte, Calif.) and Michael McPhail (Darlington, Wis.) scored bronze medals.
Ashley Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y.) swept both the 5k and 10k Open Water National Championships in Miromar Lakes, Fla., which ran from April 27-29. She became the first swimmer to do so since Chloe Sutton accomplished the same feat in 2007. Andrew Gemmell (Wilmington, Del.) won the men's 10k race on April 27, while Daniel Heron (Mission Viejo, Calif.) scored the victory in the men's 5k race on April 29.
Sixteen athletes earned spots on the 2012 U.S. National Taekwondo Team after competition on April 28-29 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Mark Lopez (Sugarland, Texas) qualified for his 10th career national team.
Melanie Oudin (Marietta, Ga.) topped Irina Falconi (Jupiter, Fla.), 7-6 (0), 3-6, 6-1, to win the 11th annual Boyd Tinsley Women's Clay Court Classic on April 29 in Charlottesville, Va. Maria Sanchez (Modesto, Calif.) and Yasmin Schnack (Sacramento, Calif.) won the women's double title.
TRACK & FIELD
Team USA dominated to sweep all six races at the 13th USA vs. the World event on April 28 in Philadelphia. Team USA won the men's distance medley relay for the first time in the event's history, sweeping first and second places.
Patrick Parish (Bloomington, Minn.) and Gail Kattouf (Greenville, S.C.) clinched overall national titles in the standard-distance event at the 2012 Duathlon National Championship on April 28 in Oro Valley, Ariz. Greg McNeil (Los Altos, Calif.) and Patty Peoples (Redlands, Calif.) won the sprint- distance races.
The U.S. Men's National Team opened the 2012 season by defeating Argentina in an exhibition match on April 27 in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. The team won 21-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-17.
The U.S. men's beach volleyball teams concluded play in the consolation bracket of the 2012 FIVB SWATCH World Tour event in Myslowice, Poland. Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) ended the tournament tied for fifth, while the duo of Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Nick Lucena (Santa Barbara, Calif.) tied for seventh.
Shawn Bunch (Columbus, Ohio) secured the U.S. an Olympic berth in the 60kg freestyle division by scoring a third-place finish at the World Olympic Games Qualifying Tournament on April 27 in Taiyuan, China.
