Kazakhstani qualifier Sesil Karatantcheva straight-setted German Julia Goerges 6-3, 7-5, while Poland's Urszula Radwanska held off qualifier Marina Erakovic of New Zealand 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
Laura Robson of Great Britain ousted Japan's Ayumi Morita, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2, and Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova needed just 48 minutes to whip Tamira Paszek in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 to advance.
This week's top seed is 2013 Australian Open champion and 2012 U.S. Open runner-up Victoria Azarenka.
Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova, fresh off her title last week in Stanford, topped reigning Wimbledon champ Marion Bartoli in last year's Carlsbad finale.
