Grambling State linebacker Cliff Exama, James Madison kicker Cameron Starke, Old Dominion quarterback Taylor Heinicke, and Stony Brook running back Brock Jackolski and cornerback Donald Porter have been named The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS National Players of Week 13 for games ending Nov. 26.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brock Jackolski, Stony Brook, Senior, 5-10, 198, RB, Shirley, NY
Jackolski scored three straight second-half touchdowns, helping Stony Brook erase a double-digit deficit in a 31-28 first-round playoff win against Albany. The senior scored on 6- and 11-yard runs, and hauled in a 55-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Essington, his only reception of the game. In addition to his 22-carry, 103-yard performance on the ground, Jackolski returned three kickoffs for 74 yards, finishing with 232 all-purpose yards.
CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Donald Porter, Stony Brook, Senior, 5-8, 181, CB, Charles Town, WV
While Jackolski led the offensive comeback, Porter helped spark the Seawolves on defense. Playing his first career playoff game, Porter led the team with nine tackles and made a pair of game-saving plays in the secondary. Porter snagged an interception late in the third quarter, setting up a Stony Brook touchdown that cut Albany's lead to four points. He then deflected a potential game-tying touchdown, which was intercepted by Dominick Reyes in the Seawolves' end zone, to seal the win with 47 seconds remaining.
Cliff Exama, Grambling State, Junior, 5-10, 235, LB, North Miami Beach, FL
Exama helped Grambling State clinch a berth in the SWAC Championship Game, leading his team to a 36-12 victory against Southern in the Bayou Classic. The junior had a team-high seven tackles and an interception in the third quarter. Exama also added three-and-a-half tackles for a loss, and now leads the team with 15 stops behind the line of scrimmage.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Cameron Starke, James Madison, Sophomore, 5-10, 155, K, Halifax, VA
Starke converted on a 35-yard field goal into the wind as time expired, giving James Madison a 20-17 first-round playoff victory against Eastern Kentucky. After missing on his first attempt, a 36-yarder that slipped wide right, Starke connected on a 21-yard kick in the third quarter and then the game-winner. Starke also handled kickoff duties, booming four kicks for an average of 52.8 yards.
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Taylor Heinicke, Old Dominion, Freshman, 6-1, 190, QB, Atlanta, GA
Heinicke completed 21-of-30 pass attempts for 269 yards and a school-record five touchdowns, leading Old Dominion to a 35-18 first-round playoff win against Norfolk State. Connecting on touchdown throws of 3, 4, 24, 2 and 18 yards, Heinicke earned his second national Freshman of the Week honor and helped the Monarchs advance to the second round against Georgia Southern.
