Ardmore, PA – South African Richard Sterne withdrew from the U.S. Open on Monday. No reason was given for the decision.
Sterne claimed his sixth European Tour title earlier this year at the Joburg Open. He later tied for 25th at the Masters.
He had been in line to make his second start at the U.S. Open. At his only other appearance at the season's second major, Sterne missed the cut in 2008 at Torrey Pines.
With Sterne's withdrawal, the sectional in Purchase, N.Y., now has four spots available instead of three.
