Lubbock, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Juwan Staten had 16 points to guide No. 14 West Virginia to a 78-67 victory over Texas Tech on Monday.
Devin Williams scored 14 points with six rebounds for the Mountaineers (14-1, 2-0 Big 12), who have won their past seven games. Daxter Miles and Gary Browne each chipped in with 12 points.
Devaugntah Williams had 21 points and six rebounds for the Red Raiders (10-5, 0-2), who have dropped four of their last five. Toddrick Gotcher gave 14 points and five boards.
West Virginia held a three-point lead to start the second half and it stayed close for the first several minutes until a layup from Miles started a 6-0 run that saw the team hold a 46-38 lead after Staten put in a layup with 14 minutes to play.
Another 9-0 run a few minutes later was capped on another Staten jumper to give the Mountaineers a 55-40 advantage with 10 1/2 minutes left.
The Red Raiders cut their deific to eight with just over two minutes to play after Zach Smith hit a pair of free throws to make it a 69-61 game, but the Mountaineers made their free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
West Virginia led by as many as 10 in the first half, but Texas Tech was able to keep it from getting out of hand thanks to a 10-0 run. West Virginia eventually took a 32-29 lead into the break.

West Virginia hosts Iowa State on Saturday ... Texas Tech plays at Kansas on Saturday ... The Mountaineers hold a 6-1 mark over the Red Raiders in the series.
