St. Mary's (Calif.), behind strong play from Bright and Waldow, beats New Mexico State 83-71

Aaron Bright finished with 21 points to help lead St. Mary's (Calif.) past New Mexico State 83-71 early Tuesday in a game that began shortly after midnight.

Brad Waldow added 16 points on 7 of 11 shooting and 12 rebounds for the Gaels, who shot 54 percent in raising their record to 2-0. Reserve Garrett Jackson had 16 points and six rebounds while Kerry Carter had 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

For New Mexico State (0-2), Daniel Mullings scored 18 points and Remi Barry had 17. The Aggies, who lost their opener to No. 11 Wichita State, shot 36 percent.

St. Mary's was up 45-31 at the half before building the lead to 21. New Mexico State pulled within eight points late in the game.

The game was part of ESPN's college basketball marathon, accounting for the late start. It ended at about 2:30 a.m.
