South Carolina All-America defensive end Jadeveon Clowney sat out Saturday's scrimmage because of a sore shoulder, while Gamecocks quarterback Connor Shaw was off target in his first action since offseason foot surgery.

Still, Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier thought it was an encouraging performance by his offense in the 90-minute session at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward said Clowney's condition wasn't serious and the defensive lineman wasn't expected to play much anyway as coaches got a look at South Carolina's younger defenders.

Backup quarterback Dylan Thompson was 5 of 7 passing for 74 yards while Shaw was 3 of 10 for 27 yards with an interception. Shaw missed spring practice because of the surgery, but said he came into fall camp at 100 percent. Shaw also rushed for 7 yards.
