Pebble Beach, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandt Snedeker carded a second-round, 5-under 67 on Friday, while Matt Jones shot a 6-under 66 and the duo shares a 1-shot lead heading into the weekend at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
Snedeker and Jones finished 36 holes at 12-under-par 131, which is one shot better than first-round co-leader Justin Hicks. Snedeker, the 2013 winner of this event, also won the RBC Canadian Open the same year. He has not won on the PGA Tour since and has six career victories on tour. Jones has one career win at last year's Shell Houston Open.
"I know what it takes to get it done around here," said Snedeker. "This is obviously a little different conditions because the weather is so good this year and the scores are a lot lower than it was when I won."
Over the first three days, players alternate playing Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course and the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula Country Club. Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill are both par 72, while the Shore Course is par 71. Following the 54-hole cut, the final round will be played at Pebble Beach on Sunday.
Hicks, who shared the first-round lead with J.B. Holmes, fired a 3-under 68 at Monterey Peninsula and he is alone in third at 11-under 132.
Jon Curran (64) Billy Horschel (65), Charlie Beljan (63), Michael Putnam (64), Chez Reavie (66), Daniel Berger (66), Alex Prugh (68), Will Wilcox (67), David Hearn (66) and Chesson Hadley (69) are all tied for fourth at 10-under.
Holmes struggled on his way to a 2-over 73 at Monterey Peninsula and he is now tied for 36th at 6-under 137. Defending champion Jimmy Walker shot a 67 at Pebble Beach and he is tied for 50th at minus-5.
Snedeker, playing at Spyglass Hill, which is considered to be the most difficult of the three courses, started off on fire before tapering off a bit down the stretch.
The 34-year-old began with a pair of birdies on one and two, quickly getting him into red numbers. Following a trio of pars from No. 3, Snedeker drained two more birdies on six and seven.
After making the turn with four straight pars from eight, Snedeker drained his final gain of the day on the par-3 12th hole, getting him to 12-under for the week. He coasted from there with six straight pars from 13 to grab a share of the second-round lead.
"Spyglass you're just trying to get out of there without too much damage," Snedeker said. "It's a tough golf course and I played really well. My wedges have been great the first two days and I've been rolling the ball really well. Obviously not putting myself in too many bad spots. Hopefully I can keep doing that the next two days at Pebble."
Like Snedeker, Jones played at Spyglass Hill on Friday and had a big day. Jones started with a birdie at the first and later rolled in his second gain on No. 4. After a par on five, Jones wrapped birdies on six, seven and nine around a bogey on eight and he made the turn at 4-under.
Jones kept going strong on the back side as he made birdies on 11, 13 and 17 to go along with his second bogey on No. 16. The 34-year-old Australian made par at the last to join Snedeker at 12-under through 36 holes.
