DENVER, Colorado (Reuters) - The Colorado Rockies pounded the New York Mets 11-3 on Tuesday to claim the opener of a three-game series.
Seth Smith went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and anchored the offense with a two-run home run in the third inning where the Rockies (4-3) scored six times to roar into an 8-0 lead.
Colorado starter Greg Smith earned his first win since 2008 by striking out eight batters and allowing just two runs in seven innings. Smith missed all of last season with injuries and lost his first start of the year against the Milwaukee Brewers.
New York third baseman David Wright finished 2-for-2 and homered but the Mets (2-5) continued their struggles with a third straight loss as they opened a six-game road trip.
