SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Sharks acquired defenceman Brent Burns from the Minnesota Wild on Friday for forward Devin Setoguchi, last year's first-round pick and this year's first-round selection.
The draft-night deal gave the Sharks the topflight defenceman they had been seeking. The 26-year-old Burns had 17 goals and 29 assists last season.
San Jose had to pay a high price. They sent a former 30-goal scorer in Setoguchi, last year's first-round pick Charlie Coyle and the 28th pick in this year's draft.
Setoguchi overcame a lacklustre start last season before finishing with 22 goals and 19 assists. The deal came a day after he signed a US$9-million, three-year contract.
The Sharks also got Minnesota's second-round pick in 2012.
