Manchester, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Manchester United denied Shakhtar Donetsk a place in the Champions League knockout round on Tuesday, getting a 1-0 win at Old Trafford to drop the Ukrainian side down to third place in Group A.
Shakhtar would have advanced with a win against United or a loss by Bayer Leverkusen, but the German side picked up a 1-0 victory at Real Sociedad to climb to 10 points.
And with Phil Jones scoring on a half-volley in the 66th minute at the Theater of Dreams, Shakhtar's Champions League quest came to an abrupt end after the club was held scoreless for the third time in group play this term.
Manchester United heads into the knockout round as winners, finishing atop Group A unbeaten on 14 points. Bayer Leverkusen joins the Red Devils in the next round after claiming 10 points.
Real Madrid came into the final matchday of the group stage with first place in Group B already secured, but Carlo Ancelotti's side ran out to a 2-0 victory at FC Copenhagen thanks to goals from Luca Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Second place has yet to be determined in Group B after Juventus' match at Galatasaray was suspended in the first half due to hail and snow accumulation.
Olympiakos punched its ticket to the knockout round by finishing second in Group C. The Greek club earned a 3-1 win over Anderlecht behind a brace from Javier Saviola to finish on 10 points, level with Benfica following its 2-1 defeat of first-place PSG. Olympiakos eclipses the Portuguese side in the table on head-to-head results.
And Tuesday's Group D action saw two come-from-behind wins as Manchester City overturned a three-goal deficit in a 3-2 win at Bayern Munich while Viktoria Plzen came from one goal down to get a 2-1 victory over CSKA Moscow.
