The Ottawa Senators have announced captain Daniel Alfredsson will have back surgery Friday.
Alfredsson played his last game Feb. 7 due to what he called a nerve problem in his lower back. He had been trying rest and rehabilitation in an effort to avoid surgery.
In 54 games, he had just 14 goals and 17 assists, and his 31 points snapped a nine-season stretch with at least 70.
Alfredsson had tried skating with the team during a late March road trip, but never got to the point where he felt comfortable playing in a game.
Alfredsson, 39, had said in April that surgery was a last resort.
"Anytime you go in and have surgery on your back, you worry about scar tissue and if that's going to stay with you," he said then. "Where I am now doesn't justify to have surgery."
It is unclear how long Alfredsson could miss by having the surgery. However, the Ottawa Citizen reported Monday the procedure could keep Alfredsson out 4-6 weeks.
