Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - The Ottawa Senators fired head coach Paul MacLean on Monday, replacing him with assistant Dave Cameron.
MacLean was in his fourth season with the Senators, who are 11-11-5 this season. Ottawa had lost five straight games before picking up a 4-3 overtime win over Vancouver on Sunday.
"I think there's an obligation for a lot of people to perform better, the players included," Senators general manager Bryan Murray said.
The Senators failed to reach the playoffs last season for the first time in MacLean's tenure. He finished with a record of 114-90-35.
MacLean led Ottawa to the playoffs in each of his first two seasons. The Senators lost a seven-game series to the New York Rangers in the first round of the 2012 playoffs, then beat Montreal in the opening round of the 2013 playoffs before falling to Pittsburgh.
MacLean won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's top coach for the lockout- shortened 2013 season after the Senators posted a record of 25-17-6.
Cameron, 56, has no prior NHL head coaching experience, but he was the head coach and general manager of Mississauga in the Ontario Hockey League for four seasons before joining the Senators.
MacLean added Cameron to his coaching staff shortly after he was hired in June 2011.
