SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State raced to a 15-point lead during the first five and a half minutes and rolled to an 84-62 season-opening victory over Trinity Baptist on Friday night in the opener for both teams.
Rashad Hassan led Savannah State with 17 points, and Stephen Wilson and Patrick Hendley added 10 points apiece.
Preston Blackman scored on a layup and a 3-pointer to get the Tigers off to a quick start. They led 16-1 with 14:34 left in the first half and never played with less than a seven-point advantage for the rest of the way.
Jyles Smith had 11 rebounds and eight points for Savannah State.
Xavier Perkins led Trinity Baptist with 15 points.
Before the game, the Savannah State men's team dedicated the season to Andrew Anderson, a former Tigers' player who died Aug. 11 from a rare strain of pneumonia. Anderson was 21 years old.
