The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Thursday that rookie defenseman Morgan Rielly will remain with the club and that forward Joffrey Lupul is day-to-day with a bruised foot.
Rielly, the fifth overall selection in the 2012 draft, has posted four assists but is a minus-three in eight games during his initial NHL action.
The 19-year-old spent 60 games with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League in Canadian juniors last season, picking up 12 goals and 42 assists, then struck for a goal and two helpers over 14 games with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL.
Earlier on Thursday, the Penguins revealed they will keep 19-year-old blueliner and fellow 2012 first-round pick Olli Maatta in the NHL.
Lupul suffered his injury when an errant shot from defenseman Paul Ranger deflected off his skate in practice. X-rays revealed no significant damage, but the club recalled Josh Leivo from the Marlies.
The unlucky 30-year-old center leads the Maple Leafs with six goals and ranks second on the team with 10 points in 10 games thus far.
