Foxborough, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The New England Revolution will aim to put the brakes on a lengthy losing streak on Wednesday when the clubs returns home to face the Colorado Rapids at Gillette Stadium.
There was a time, earlier in the season, when the Revs were on top of the Eastern Conference with 23 points following a 2-1 victory over D.C. United on May 24.
But since then, Jay Heaps' club has not earned a single point in league play and is stuck in a potentially season-crippling eight-match losing streak which dropped the club down to sixth place in the East -- outside the playoff picture.
Last week's loss to Columbus was just the latest in the Revs extraordinary run of futility. Columbus struck first just moments before the intermission when Federico Higuain curled home an excellent free kick, putting the Revs behind the eight-ball by conceding the first goal for the eighth time this season.
But Heaps' team found an equalizer five minutes into the second half which provided some renewed life, but Columbus snatched all three points four minutes from time when Ethan Finlay latched onto Justin Meram's chipped pass and buried his shot.
"As much as the play is in the middle of the field and back and forth, it comes down to what happens at each end of the field," said Scott Caldwell. "We're not doing well enough at each end. We've got to change that."
"You've got to roll up your sleeves and keep going forward," said Heaps. "It's awful. It's really tough, but at the same time, you've got to keep perspective and keep digging. I think our guys, we've got to keep going. We have a really young team and we know we can win games in this league, and we've got to find a way quick."
Colorado, meanwhile, is coming off a comfortable 3-0 drubbing of Chivas USA last week, to move into third place in the Western Conference with 30 points from 20 matches.
Midfielder Nick LaBroccas 16th minute off-balance curler and Drew Moors header off a corner 10 minutes later gave the Rapids a comfortable 2-0 lead, while Gabriel Torres cemented the result with his first goal of the season 15 minutes from time.
It was a fitting way for the Rapids to pay homage to head coach Pablo Mastroeni, who was honored for his exceptional playing career prior to the game.
"It was a beautiful evening," Mastroeni said. "It was great to have my family and friends in town and cap it off with a wonderful performance from the guys."
"It was a very good performance from the guys. I think defensively we were really tight and didn't allow anything. I've been saying all year, if you're good defensively, you're going to get good attacking opportunities. I think we relished those moments in the first half going forward, and could have had a few more. But again, the defensive effort, the mindset, the mentality - it was spot on tonight."
Wednesday's match will be the first of the season between the clubs, which last met on July 17, 2013 -- a 2-1 win for the Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
