Washington, DC – Howard University has reportedly suspended all of its intercollegiate sports programs pending an internal review.
"It is with great regret that we have temporarily suspended intercollegiate athletic competition. This is a self-imposed action while the university conducts a review. We are working quickly to resolve this issue," university spokeswoman Kerry-Ann Hamilton said in a statement issued Wednesday to the Washington City Paper.
No official announcement was posted on the university's website and emails to university officials were not immediately returned.
Howard, a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, has 17 athletics teams, including six spring programs that are in season and immediately affected by the suspension: men's and women's tennis, men's and women's track & field, softball and women's lacrosse.
Recent games involving the softball and women's lacrosse teams were canceled.
