Robert Griffin III's quest for redemption is potentially over just two weeks into the season.
The Redskins' quarterback dislocated his ankle early in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Jaguars and was carted off the field.
Griffin rolled to his right and threw across his body, and just as he released the ball he appeared to suffer the injury when planting his left leg.
"My ankle got caught on the ground," Griffin said after the game.
The pass was completed to DeSean Jackson, but Griffin came down hard out of bounds and stayed face down on the sideline in obvious pain. A slew of trainers came to his aid and placed an air cast on the lower half of his leg, and tears were in his eyes as he was wheeled off to the locker room.
Kirk Cousins relieved Griffin and led the Redskins to a 41-10 victory.
The Redskins did not give a timeline for the length of Griffin's absence but said he will undergo further tests on Monday.
"We're sick about Robert," first-year Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said. "People don't understand how much work goes into being a starting QB."
Griffin tore both the lateral collateral and anterior cruciate ligaments in his right knee at the end of his award-winning rookie campaign two seasons ago. He battled back to play in the season opener last year but struggled in his sophomore season.
He showcased his running and throwing ability early on Sunday and looked in peak form before the acrobatic but fateful throw cost him more playing time.
Jackson, Washington's prime offseason addition, also suffered an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder and is considered day-to-day.
