Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Red Sox announced they have signed right-handed pitcher Rick Porcello to a four-year contract extension.
Terms were not disclosed, but a Boston Globe report indicated that the deal would total $82.5 million. Porcello was set to become a free agent after the 2015 season.
Porcello was acquired by the Red Sox in an offseason trade that sent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and two other players to the Tigers and is expected to make his 2015 debut Wednesday against Philadelphia.
The 26-year-old set career bests in innings pitched with 204 2/3 and ERA at 3.43 in 2014. In six seasons with Detroit, Porcello owns a 76-63 record and a 4.30 ERA in 184 appearances, all but four of which were starts.
