BOSTON (Reuters) - The Boston Red Sox have made a double splash in the free agent market by signing former Los Angeles Angels starter John Lackey and outfielder Mike Cameron, Major League Baseball website mlb.com reported Tuesday.
Right-hander Lackey agreed to a deal reported to be worth $82.5 million over five years, according to local media.
Pending results of a physical exam he took in Boston, Lackey will join Josh Beckett and left-hander Jon Lester at the top of a rotation that also includes Daisuke Matsuzaka.
The 31-year-old Lackey went 11-8 with a 3.83 ERA last season and threw 7 1/3 shutout innings in the Angels' opening game win against the Red Sox in the AL Division playoff series.
The best season for Lackey, who amassed a career record of 102-71 for the Angels, was in 2007 when he posted a 19-9 mark with a 3.01 earned run average.
Cameron, who played the last two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, is expected to receive more than $16 million for his two-year contract and ease the anticipated loss of free agent outfielder Jason Bay.
Last season Cameron, a highly regarded fielder who turns 37 in January, hit .250 with 24 home runs and 70 RBI. He has also played for the White Sox, Reds, Mariners, Mets and Padres.
