Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Red Sox avoided arbitration with pitchers Rick Porcello and Junichi Tazawa by agreeing on one-year contracts on Friday.
Porcello, 26, was acquired by Boston from Detroit in December in exchange for outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and two minor leaguers.
The right-hander is coming off his best season, where he compiled a 15-13 mark with a 3.43 earned run average over a career-high 204 2/3 innings 32 games (31 starts). He also led the American League with three shutouts.
In six seasons with the Tigers, Porcello went 76-63 with a 4.30 ERA and 655 strikeouts in 184 games (180 starts).
Tazawa went 4-3 with a 2.86 ERA in 63 innings over 71 appearances during 2014. The 28-year-old owns a career 12-11 record with a 3.27 ERA in 188 games spanning five seasons.
