Madrid, Spain (SportsNetwork.com) - Real Madrid claimed its second consecutive league win on Saturday after easing to a 2-0 result over Malaga at the Bernabeu.
Malaga went toe-to-toe with Madrid through a scoreless opening 45 minutes, but Los Blancos broke the deadlock just a minute into the second half when Angel Di Maria found the back of the net.
Malaga sent number forward in search of an equalizer, but struggled to generating any kind of quality scoring chances as they attempted just three shots through the duration of the 90 minutes, with just one on target.
Real finished the job in stoppage time when Cristiano Ronaldo buried a penalty kick to lift the club to third place in La Liga on 22 points, three back of Barcelona for the top spot.
Real Sociedad 2, Valencia 1
Valencia, Spain - Real Sociedad earned its second win of the young season on Saturday after securing a 2-1 victory over Valencia at the Mestalla.
Sociedad was on the front foot from the outset and found the first tally of the afternoon four minutes before the break when Antoine Griezmann fired one home.
After the break the visitors doubled their advantage just prior to the hour mark through a goal from Ruben Pardo. The hosts pulled one back in stoppage time through Dorlan Pabon, but it wasn't enough as Sociedad held on to take three points.
Barcelona 0, Osasuna 0
Navarra, Spain - The return of Lionel Messi did little to help Barcelona on Saturday as the defending champions were held to a scoreless draw with Osasuna at the Estadio El Sadar.
Barcelona dominated almost every facet of the match, keeping 76 percent possession and attempting 12 shots, while Osasuna managed just one on target, but neither side could find the breakthrough.
Messi came on in the 68th minute for Xavi, but could not will his team to victory as the Catalans dropped points for the first time this season.
Espanyol 1, Atletico Madrid 0
Barcelona, Spain - Atletico Madrid suffered its first defeat of the season on Saturday after falling to Espanyol by a 1-0 score at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat.
Atletico kept more of the possession for the duration of the match, but failed to put a single shot on frame and it was a mistake that led to the game's only goal in the 54th minute as goalkeeper Thibault Courtois was charged with an own goal that proved to be the winner for Espanyol.
Despite the loss, Atletico remains in second place in La Liga on 24 points, while the victory for Espanyol moves the club up to fifth place with 14 points from nine matches.
