Real Madrid confirmed on Monday that manager Jose Mourinho will leave the club at the end of the season after three years in charge.
The club called a press conference on Monday to make the announcement, with Madrid president Florentino Perez confirming what most have suspected for the past few months.
"We've decided to bring our relationship to an end at the end of the current season," said Perez. "The club and manager agree the timing is right to bring our relationship to an end. On behalf of the board of directors we would like to thank Jose Mourinho for all his hard work. The team have improved in his three years and we wish him all the best. It was the right moment."
Perez made it a point to state that Mourinho wasn't fired, and that the separation was mutual, which many believe will pave the way for the Portuguese manager to make a return to Chelsea this summer.
In his three years at Madrid, Mourinho helped the club win one league title and two domestic cups, while guiding the team to the semifinals of the Champions League in all three seasons.
Madrid is widely tipped to bring in PSG manager Carlo Ancelotti to replace Mourinho after Ancelotti guided the French club to its first league title in 19 years.
Ancelotti has already asked for his release from PSG, but Nasser al-Khelaifi, the club president, does not appear eager to let his man leave.
"He [Ancelotti] asked to depart for Real Madrid. It is not possible because he has a contract for one year more, so that is our decision," Al-Khelaifi said.
