St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Tampa Bay Rays said Thursday they have re-signed right-handed reliever Juan Carlos Oviedo to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.

The deal could be worth as much as $2.9 million based on performance bonuses, the Rays said.

Oviedo, 31, was recovering from Tommy John surgery on his elbow and didn't pitch for the Rays this past season after being signed as a free agent. The Rays declined last month to pick up a $2 million option on Oviedo, making him a free agent again.

Formerly known as Leo Nunez, he hasn't appeared in a major league game since Sept. 21, 2011. He admitted using forged documents in order to sign a major league contract and was placed on Major League Baseball's restricted list for the remainder of that season.

Oviedo is 18-20 with a 4.34 ERA and 92 saves in 317 career games, including six starts, with the Kansas City Royals and Marlins.
