The Tampa Bay Rays placed pitcher Jeff Niemann on the 15-day disabled list prior to Friday's game against the Cleveland Indians.
Niemann has yet to pitch this season due to a sore right shoulder, allowing the Rays to make the transaction retroactive to March 28.
The 6-foot-9 righty had been beaten out by offseason pickup Roberto Hernandez for the fifth and final spot in the Tampa rotation during the spring, despite Niemann registering a respectable 2.92 earned run average over seven appearances (five starts).
To fill the roster spot, the Rays recalled reliever Brandon Gomes from Triple- A Durham.
Gomes went 2-0 with a 1.74 ERA during the spring and has pitched in 55 games for Tampa Bay over the past two seasons.
