Pitt freshman Tyler Boyd hoping to emerge from murky receiving picture for Panthers

Pittsburgh freshman wide receiver Tyler Boyd is making a splash in his first training camp.

Boyd has emerged from a crowded field to be the leading contender for the No. 2 spot behind Devin Street. Coach Paul Chryst elevated Boyd to the first team a week into camp and Boyd has quickly developed a rapport with starting quarterback Tom Savage.

Boyd credited the leadership provided by Street for his quick rise up the depth chart. Street says he's been impressed by Boyd's work ethic and believes he can make an immediate contribution.

The Panthers need someone to step up. The only receiver besides Street with college experience is Ed Tinker, who has five career receptions.

Pitt opens the 2013 season on Sept. 2 against No. 11 Florida State.
