Pittsburgh, PA – The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to terms with Kelly Shoppach on a minor league deal and assigned the veteran catcher to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Shoppach, 33, began the 2013 season with Seattle, hitting .196 in 35 games. After being released by the Mariners on June 20, the Washington Nationals signed him to a minor league deal in early July. He saw action in 10 games with Triple-A Syracuse before being cut loose at the end of the month.
For his major league career, Shoppach has hit .224 with 70 homers and 216 RBI over 571 games with Boston, Cleveland, Tampa Bay, the New York Mets and Mariners.
