Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher A.J. Burnett has been diagnosed with an orbital fracture of his right eye.
Burnett suffered the injury Wednesday when his own bunt attempt off a pitch from a machine bounced off his bat and struck his face between the eye and temple.
Additional information will be made available following Friday's surgery.
Burnett was acquired on February 18 from the New York Yankees, and had been the Pirates' presumed Opening Day starter.
In 33 games (32 starts) last season, Burnett went 11-11 with a 5.15 earned run average.
