BOSTON (Reuters) - Philadelphia Flyers' defenseman Danny Syvret never had a reputation for being involved in anything too dramatic until Friday at Fenway Park.
Syvret, 24, playing in his 44th NHL game, grabbed the nation's attention by scoring his first ever goal in front of a 38,112 capacity crowd and a television audience of millions.
He was in the spotlight after opening the scoring against the Boston Bruins in the third annual Winter Classic, a regular season NHL game played outdoors on New Year's day.
Syvret, a native of Millgrove, Ontario, first skated in the majors in the 2005-06 season for Edmonton but has spent much of his ice time in the minor leagues.
He had played 15 games for Philadelphia this season but was recalled from the Adirondack Phantoms, the team's American Hockey League affiliate, only last week.
Syvret scored less than five minutes into the second period on Friday with a wrist shot past goal-tender Tim Thomas, who was later named in the U.S. squad for the Vancouver Olympics.
After trailing for most of the game, Boston eventually stormed back for a 2-1 overtime win.
Mark Recchi tied the game in a power play about two minutes before the end of regulation and Marco Sturm clinched the win 1:57 into overtime to send the home fans wild.
The iconic Fenway Park baseball stadium, which opened in 1912, was shrouded in clouds but forecasts of heavy rain did not pan out. Temperature at game time was 40 degrees Fahrenheit, league officials said.
The New Year's day game has quickly become the league's signature event and a marketing and merchandising bonanza. Ticket scalpers commanded hundreds, and even thousands, of dollars for seats to Friday's game.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said the league was in the process of choosing the venue for the 2011 Classic.
