Tight end Paul Jones has departed the Penn State program.

Nittany Lions head coach Bill O'Brien confirmed the move Wednesday, saying the redshirt sophomore left for personal reasons.

Jones, a converted quarterback, lost the starting job to Matt McGloin, then was bumped down to third string behind true freshman Steven Bench.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, he requested more playing time, which resulted in the switch. Jones caught one pass in a 34-7 win over Navy on Sept. 15, then lost seven yards on a rush in last Saturday's win over Temple.

Penn State (2-2) kicks off its Big Ten slate at Illinois on Saturday.
