Padres' Latos nearly goes the distance in Colorado
Denver, CO – Mat Latos came within one out of his second 1, game series at Coors Field.
Dexter Fowler hit a blooper to shallow center that resulted in a one-out double in the home ninth. Two batters later, Jordan Pacheco grounded a run- scoring single up the middle to chase Latos (8-14) from the game.
Heath Bell gave up a single to Kevin Kouzmanoff before striking out Wilin Rosario to notch his 40th save of the season.
Latos scattered six hits, walked one and struck out nine.
"I wanted [the complete game], but it's better that we got the [win]. That's all that matters," Latos said.
Orlando Hudson and Jeremy Hermida each knocked in a run for San Diego, which has won four of its last five games.
Jhoulys Chacin (11-13) allowed two runs -- one earned -- on six hits in six innings for the Rockies, who were dealt their sixth straight loss.
"We just have to go out there and play hard and not put pressure on ourselves to get things done," Pacheco said.
The Padres pushed across a run in the opening frame. With men on the corners and two outs, Hudson ripped an RBI single to right field.
San Diego doubled its lead in the sixth when Hudson and Hermida stroked consecutive one-out doubles.
