New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin was named the NHL's top player for the month of January.
The veteran scorer earned the First Star after leading all players with 12 goals, adding three assists to finish the month with 15 points over 13 games. He scored his 30th goal of the season on Sunday against the St. Louis Blues to become the fifth player in league history to reach that mark in each of his first 10 seasons, joining Mike Gartner (15), Wayne Gretzky (13), Mike Bossy (10) and Jari Kurri (10).
New York Islanders center John Tavares was the Second Star after registering eight goals and eight assists in 12 games. He also scored four times for Team Toews in the NHL All-Star Game.
Boston Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask posted a 7-1-3 record with a 1.61 goals- against average and a .949 save percentage to pick up the Third Star.
