The Baltimore Orioles acquired pitcher Bud Norris at the trade deadline and placed starter Jason Hammel on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a right flexor mass strain.

Baltimore took a leap and acquired Norris from the Houston Astros in exchange for outfielder L.J. Hoes, pitcher Josh Hader and the O's 2014 draft competitive balance pick.

Norris, 28, went 6-9 with a 3.93 ERA in 21 starts for the Astros. He departs Houston after four-plus seasons with a 34-46 lifetime record and 4.33 ERA in 119 games, all but one as a starter.

Hoes was hitting .304 in 99 games with Triple-A Norfolk this year, while Hader went 3-6 with a 2.65 ERA in 17 starts for Delmarva in the South Atlantic League.

The compensation pick is in Round A, selection 2.

Hammel has gone 7-8 with a 5.20 earned run average in 21 starts for Baltimore this season, but hasn't won since July 7. His roster move is retroactive to July 29.

To fill the roster spot, the O's reinstated outfielder Steve Pearce from the 15-day DL. Pearce hasn't played since June 19, sidelined by a left wrist injury. In 28 games this season, he hit .235 with three homers and nine RBI.
