Oklahoma tops poll for 100th time; Alabama back to second

New York, NY – Oklahoma remained the top team in the latest Associated Press college football poll, earning the No. 1 ranking for the 100th time.

The Sooners, despite not playing this weekend, received 32 first-place votes for the second consecutive week and a total of 1,441 points from a nationwide media panel. The program became the first to hold the top ranking 100 times since the poll began in 1936.

Alabama and LSU swapped places this week, as the Crimson Tide moved back to No. 2 and the Tigers slipped to third. LSU, after a 49-3 dismantling of Northwestern State on Saturday, still earned 17 first-place votes and Alabama again garnered nine No. 1 tallies following a 27-11 victory at Penn State. The Tide, though, have six more total points than the Tigers this week.

Boise State, which was idle this weekend, again picked up two first-place votes to remain fourth and Florida State held at No. 5 after a 62-10 thumping of Charleston Southern. The Seminoles will get their first test next Saturday when Oklahoma invades Doak Campbell Stadium.

Stanford, Wisconsin, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Nebraska round out this week's top 10. Wisconsin and Oklahoma State each moved up one spot, while Texas A&M didn't play this weekend and dropped two places.

The second 10 consists of South Carolina, Oregon, Virginia Tech, Arkansas, Michigan State, Florida, Ohio State, West Virginia, Baylor and South Florida. Ohio State dropped two spots from 15th after a narrow escape against Toledo.

Auburn, Arizona State, TCU, Texas and Mississippi State are the last five teams ranked this week. Auburn is back in the poll after a one-week absence, thanks to a wild 41-34 win over Mississippi State, while Arizona State is ranked for the first time this season following its 37-30 overtime triumph against Missouri on Friday.

Missouri was 21st last week and dropped out of the poll, while Penn State also fell out after being ranked 23rd and losing at home to Alabama.

In addition to the top-five showdown between Oklahoma and Florida State on Saturday, this week's schedule also features an SEC battle between LSU and Mississippi State on Thursday night Starkville.
