No. 11 Wichita State beats Memphis

Sioux Falls, SD (SportsNetwork.com) - No. 11 Wichita State pulled away from Memphis in the second half to extend its regular-season winning streak to 33 games.

Ron Baker scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Shockers to a 71-56 win over the Tigers on Tuesday.

After a first half marred by poor shooting and turnovers from both teams, Memphis pulled within four just three minutes into the second half, but the Shockers responded with an 11-0 run to put the Tigers away.

The run started with a thunderous dunk by Tekele Cotton and included Wichita State's first 3-pointer of the season, made by Baker with over 16 minutes remaining in the second game of the season.

Baker made two 3-pointers and was 7-of-8 from the foul line. Preseason All- American guard Fred VanVleet was second on the Shockers (2-0) with 15 points on 5-of-14 shooting with four rebounds and four steals.

Nick King led Memphis (0-1) with 16 points and seven rebounds, and Austin Nichols chipped in 10 points and six blocked shots. The Tigers shot just 40 percent from the field and committed 24 turnovers and only had four assists as a team.

"If you (said) before the game we'd hold them to 40 percent from the field and under 30 percent from 3, I'd have said we had a shot," said Memphis coach Josh Pastner. "The biggest thing is I didn't factor in 24 turnovers."

Wichita State entered halftime with a 29-22 lead. Neither team made a 3-point shot in the first half, and an eight-minute field goal drought by the Tigers allowed the Shockers to build an early lead. The teams combined to shoot 19- of-55 from the field before halftime.
