Red Bull New York signed midfielder Lloyd Sam, who played in England from 2003-12, on Thursday.

Sam has played for Charlton Athletic, Leyton Orient, Sheffield Wednesday, Southend United, Leeds United and Notts County in various levels in England.

"Lloyd has impressed our coaching staff during his trial in New York and we are pleased to sign him," said Red Bulls general manager and sporting director Erik Soler. "He is someone who has good speed and can play a number of roles in our squad."

Sam, 27, makes the switch to MLS after a long career in England. He began his career in 2003 with Charlton Athletic and remained with the club through 2010. He made 119 appearances for Charlton, and scored six goals.

During his time with Charlton, Sam went on loan to Leyton Orient, Sheffield Wednesday, and Southend United. He was at Leeds United from 2010-12 and spent time on loan with Notts County in 2012.

Sam will be available for selection pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa.
