Philadelphia, PA – In the first game of Nashville Regional, the third-seed Illinois Fighting Illini pulled out one of several upsets of the first day with a 6-4 win over second-seed Georgia Tech.
Jordan Parr smacked a three-run home run in the fourth inning to get the scoring started for the Illini (35-19) and Thomas Lindauer, Justin Parr and Davis Hendrickson each had RBI singles. Kevin Duchene gave up three runs on eight hits in seven strong innings and was awarded the win.
Georgia Tech (34-26) wasted strong days from Daniel Palka (3-for-5, triple, two runs) and Thomas Smith (2-for-3, HR) in the loss. Palka also pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in the contest but Dusty Isaacs took the loss by allowing four runs over 5 1/3 innings of work.
The top-seed Vanderbilt Commodores ran up five runs in the first inning and then kept piling on as they coasted to a 9-1 victory over the East Tennessee State Buccaneers in the second game of the regional.
Connor Harrell was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI while Conrad Gregor was also 2-for-4 with two RBI for Vanderbilt (52-9). Kevin Ziomek gave up just one unearned run on three hits in seven innings to get the win.
Jimmy Nesselt was lit up for eight runs, five of which were earned, on five hits in his 6 2/3 innings of work as he took the loss for ETSU (36-23). Dylan Tritsch had two of the Buccaneers five total hits.
On Saturday Georgia Tech and ETSU will meet up in the loser's bracket while Vanderbilt and Illinois will play later in the day in the winner's bracket. The winner of the Georgia Tech/ETSU contest will face the loser between Vanderbilt and Illinois on Sunday for a spot in the regional final. The loser of the Georgia Tech/ETSU contest on Saturday will be eliminated from the tournament.
